Brinda calls for debate on Women's Reservation Bill
New Delhi, Aug 2 (UNI) CPI(M) member Brinda Karat today urged Parliament to debate a radical Women's Reservation Bill in the ongoing Monsoon Session which has not gathered a consensus among political parties.
Raising the issue during zero hour, she said the idea was mooted during former prime minister H D Deve Gowda's tenure. Over 10 years have passed but it is yet to gather momentum, said Ms Karat.
BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has not even drafted the bill to provide 33 per cent reservation in parliament for women members. She wondered how a discussion could take place in such circumstances.
