AJYCP protest govt's slow compilation of NRC

Guwahati, Aug 2 (UNI) The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) today staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here to protest the 'slow' pace of compilation of the NRC.

The students' body decried the state government's efforts towards compilation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and stated that with the present pace of work, it would not be completed in another year.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had announced last year that the NRC would be upgraded within two years.

The AJYCP, however, alleged that the work was not progressing at a satisfactory pace and the government would be hard pressed to meet the deadline.

The AJYCP demanded the upgradation of the NRC of 1951 to 1971 as they claimed it would help in identifying the immigrants from the genuine citizens.
