Singer Cher to auction clothes, jewelry

NEW YORK, Aug 1 (Reuters) US singer and actress Cher, whose unique sense of style has been featured in fashion magazines, plans to sell some of her famous wardrobe for charity.

Sotheby's and Julien's Auctions said yesterday they planned an October 3-4 sale of 200 items from the Oscar-winning actress' professional and personal wardrobe. The clothing, along with some of Cher's furniture, artwork and jewelry, could raise more than 1 million dollars, according to the auction houses.

Among the gowns to be sold is a Bob Mackie original worn by Cher to the Academy Awards, and a black net gown with multicolored embroidered dots and stones she wore on ''The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour'' television show in 1974.

''I am beginning a new chapter in my career and have decided to rewrite my personal environment, my home,'' Cher said in a statement.

Some of the money raised from the sale will go to The Cher Charitable Foundation, which supports a number of causes.
