Revenue Official held on bribe charge

Madurai, Aug 1 (UNI) A lower-rung Revenue Department official and a clerk, posted at a refugee camp for Sri Lankan Tamils on the city outskirts, were arrested today on the charge of accepting a bribe for allotting a house to a newly-wedded refugee.

According to Vigilance personnel, Revenue Inspector, Karuppaiah and the clerk, Mary, who acted as the conduit, were caught redhanded while receiving Rs 1000 from Ravi, the refugee.

Ravi, who was in the camp at Anaiyur since 1990, got married this January and sought allotment of a separate house. For this, Karuppaiah had demanded Rs 3000 as bribe and Rs 1000 was the first instalment. A trap was laid and the revenue official and the clerk were nabbed while receiving the amount, Vigilance police said.

Both were remanded to the custody later in the day.
