Bangalore, Aug 1 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today disposed off a public interest litigation, filed by the city-based NGO 'Wildlife First', challenging the permission granted to mini hydel power projects in the Western Ghats area.

Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Mr Justice N K Patil disposed off the petition, reserving the right of the petitioner to approach the authorities concerned for relief. The Bench directed the authorities to hear and dispose off such representations within 30 days of its receipt.

The petitioner contended that out of 181 projects, 41 were in the bio-diversity hot spots of the Ghat section, protected by UNESCO.

The Supreme Court had held that forest area should not be used for non-forest purposes. Setting up of such projects would affect the wildlife.
