Nathpa Jhakri remains closed

Shimla, Aug 1 (UNI) The 1,500 MW Nathpa-Jhakri hydro power project in this district of Himachal Pradesh remained closed for the ninth day today as the level of silt in Sutlej at Nathpa and Khaab increased considerably, company sources today said.

The silt level in the reservioir was 9,000 parts per million (ppm) at Nathpa, against a maximum permissible limit of 4,000 ppm, while the water discharge was 1,100 cumecs, against a normal discharge of 500 to 600 cumecs.

The silt level in Sutlej was 25,000 PPM at Khaab, while the silt content in Spiti at the confluence of Sutlej and Sptiti was 3500 ppm, sources said.

The day to day variation in water discharge and silt content was causing anxiety to the project authorities since closure of the project was causing a loss of Rs five crore to Rs six crore every day, the sources added.
