Bhopal, Aug 1 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Jamuna Devi has demanded a public apology from Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for allegedly making a rape victim's identity public.

''During a women's panchayat organised recently by the government, the chief minister made the victim's identity public while providing Rs 1 lakh as assistance. The disclosure constituted an insult to women,'' Ms Devi wrote in a letter to Mr Chouhan.

Copy of the missive were released to the press today.

Pointing out that it was imperative to keep the victim's identity secret in such cases, she added that the disclosure amounted to a criminal offence.

''There is a provision to disburse compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. In the absence of an apology, I will be compelled to take legal steps for women's rights and guarding their honour,'' Ms Devi added.
