Date for bypolls to Madurai seat soon

Chennai, Aug 1: The Election Commission will finalise the date for holding byelection to the Madurai Central Assembly seat soon after the publication of the revised voters list of the constituency on August 31, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalsamy said today.

Talking to mediapersons at the airport on his arrival from New Delhi, Mr Gopalsamy said the draft voters list of the Madurai Central Assembly contituency would be released on August 11 and if there was any correction or deletion in the electoral list, the same would be carried out before August 31.

Asked when would the entire voters of Tamil Nadu get their photo identity cards, he said the process is going on in full swing.

However, it would take some time to provide Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) to all voters in the state.

The CEC said the task of providing nearly 8,000 voters of the Madurai Central Assembly constituency, who were yet to get photo identity cards was expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The Madurai Central Assembly seat had fallen vacant following the sudden demise of Tamil Nadu Minister P T Palanivel Rajan.
