SIMI activists remanded to police custody
Jabalpur, July 31 (UNI) A local court today remanded two SIMI activists to police custody and seven to judicial custody in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities Act of the IPC.
The workers were apprehended in this cantonment town late yesterday as part of a crackdown in the wake of the 7/11 Mumbai transit terror assault.
Civil Judge A K Singh remanded Sarfaraz Ahmad and Sarfaraz Ansari to police custody until August four while Amimuddin, Waseemuddin, Pervez, Jameel Ahmad, Khurshid Ahmad, Aasif Hussain and Javed Akhtar would be in judicial custody until August 13.
''Khandwa police alerted us about SIMI workers in Gohalpur and Hanumantal areas based on details provided during the interrogation of SIMI's Imran Ansari who was nabbed in that district. Ansari was brought here yesterday,'' said City Superintendent of Police Rakesh Singh.
Ansari's cell phone was seized from Sarfaraz. Objectionable literature, besides books entitled 'Movement' and 'Tehrik-i-Millat' that ''fanned communal sentiments,'' were also seized.
More than two dozen persons were interrogated during the crackdown but those who did not have SIMI links were let off.
