RTI: You have the right to know

RTI, look around and you will find atleast one individual discussing RTI. So what is RTI all about? To begin with, it means Right To Information.

Recently, an Act has been introduced to strenghten this right of this country's citizens. It is an Act that aims to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens to secure access to information under the control of public authorities, in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority, the constitution of a Central Information Commission and State Information Commissions and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

What do you mean by 'information?'

Information means any material in any form that is related to administration, operations or decisions of a public authority.

What does Right to Information mean?

It includes the right to -
- inspect works, documents, records.
- take notes, extracts or certified copies of documents or records.
- take certified samples of material.
- obtain information in form of printouts, diskettes, floppies, tapes, video cassettes or in any other electronic mode or through printouts
