Postmen to sell condoms in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Jul 31 (UNI) Next time if a postman volunteers to get you a condom in Jharkhand be not surprised.

For postmen in the state from now onwards will carry condoms, family planning kits and ORS packs for sale besides their regular assigment of delivering letters.

This novel project to use the 'dakwalas' as tools to control birth rate and make availalble some other materials for children's health at door steps came into immediate effect following union minister of state for IT and communication Shakeel Ahmed's announcemnt in this regard at a function here yesterday.

An accord between Hindustan Latex Ltd, manufacturer of family planning kit and the postal department in the state had also been signed.

With this all post offices in Jharkahnd will keep stock of condoms, family planning kits, ORS packs and some materials for children's health.

Inaugarating this scheme, Mr Ahmed said it was a historic step which would be beneficial for people in state.

Chief post master general A S Prasad and senior postal superintedent M N Singh were present on the occasion.

In the wake of growing incidence of AIDS victims among the Asom rifles jawans last year, it became mandatory for the personnel to carry condoms round-the-clock whether on or off duty.
