Flood Alert in UP ; govt in touch with army

Lucknow, July 31 (UNI) An alert has been sounded across Uttar Pradesh, which had seen half of its region under floods last year.

The state is geared up with flood control mechanism as the flood threat looms large this year as well.

A total of 124 people have lost their lives due to rains all over the state during the current monsoon season, according to reports reaching here at the state headquarters.

As many as 28 districts have been identified as 'sensitive', where the district authorities had been directed to ensure rescue and relief operations in case of flood or flash flood.

''The state administration is in touch with the army for rescue and relief works as a precautionary measure in several districts, mainly in eastern UP,'' a revenue department spokesman told UNI here.

With monsoon rains continuing to lash parts of Uttar Pradesh, the potent threat of floods emanating from the rivers of neighbouring Nepal has prompted the concerned state government departments to take urgent measures.

A flood control room had been established in the state capital to keep a round-the-clock monitoring of rainfall and flow of rivers, UP irrigation minister Meerajuddin Ahmad said.

A total of 58 places are already under the monitoring of Central Water Commission (CWC) to foresee the flood like situation.

''Wireless sets have been provided in 92 sensitive areas, where the danger of floods is perceived,'' the minister added. Districts like Padrauna, Maharajganj, Gorakhpur, Bahraich, Ballia, Lakhimpur and Deoria are under constant vigil.

There have been specific reports of rain water marooning villages in the Lucknow outskirts, as well in Lakhimpur, where boats have been pressed into service to rescue the affected.
