Congress alleges corruption in implementation of PMGSY

Gangtok, Jul 31 (UNI) Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) today alleged widescale corruption in the execution of the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana(PMGSY) scheme in the state and described Chief Minister Pawan Chamling's repetated public commitment to make the state free from corruption as an ''eye wash''.

SPCC President Narbahadur Bhandari alleged that the contractors for the execution of works under the scheme were being selected on the choice of ruling Sikkim Democratic Front party for a premium flouting the norms.

The former Chief Minister said though the rules laid down that only one work would be awarded to one contractor and contractors involved in any construction work would not be eligible to participate in the tender for PMGSY schemes, the rule had never been followed.

Out of the total 500 class-1A government registered contractors only 20 to 25 were repeatedly choosen to carry out major developmental works, he alleged.

He also alleged that the works were awarded to relatives of Chief Minister, Ministers and MLAs of the state ignoring the rules specified in the Sikkim Public Works code.

Some of the contractors were even subletting the works on a commission basis, he said.
