Compensation demanded for Indians of Bahrain fire
New Delhi, Jul 31: The CPI(M) today criticised the Indian missions in the Gulf region for being careless about the safety and security of thousands of Indian nationals working in various countries and said the government should pay compensation to the 16 Indians killed and 11 injured in yesterday's fire in Bahrain.
Raising the matter in Rajya Sabha after the Question Hour, CPI(M) member A Vijayaraghavan said the fire incident had raised serious questions about the safety and security of thousands of Indian workers in Gulf countries.
Many Indian nationals were employed as construction workers in various companies but were not provided adequate safety and security measures.
''We must ensure the safety and security of the workeerss and see to it that adequate compensation is given to them as well as the injured in yesterday's fire incident,'' he said.
He said the central government was equally responsible because Indian missions in those countries were also careless about their asafety which made them liable to compensation from the Indian government.
