Some 16,000 people evacuated from flood-affected Sangli Dist

Sangli, Maharashtra, July 30 (UNI) About 16,000 flood-affected people have been shifted to safer places in this district as the water level of the Krishna river continues to rise following the incessant rains.

District Collectorate sources this evening said from Walva tehsil, the worst affected region here, about 11,000 people -- highest in the tehsil -- have been evacuated, while the remaining are from Sangli city, Palus and Miraj villages respectively.

Maharashtra Finance Minister Jayant Patil today toured the flood-affected villages of Walva tehsil, which is his home constituency, to take stock of the situation.
