Mayoral polls: K'taka HC posts hearing on petition to next week
Bangalore, July 25 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court posted to next week the hearing of the petition challenging the reservation of the Mayor's post of Mangalore City Corporation for the general category in the coming elections.
Mr Justice N Kumar adjourned the hearing of the petition filed by Corporation Councillor Vijaya Arun.
The petitioner contended that as per the rotation being followed all these years, the Mayor's post was reserved for the five categories-- General Merit, Bct, Backward Classes, General (Women), SCs and STs in that order as per the notification dated August two, 2005.
As per the same, the post of Mayor had to be reserved for general women candidate. But the Government had issued a notification on July 10, reserving the Mayor's post for general category and Deputy Mayor's post for general women.
The petitioner contended that she was an aspiring candidate for the post in the ensuing election and her term of Councillor was to expire in February next.
She argued that the government notification was illegal and sought to quash it and restore the rotation as per 97 notification.
