AIDSO opposes signing of GATS
New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) The Delhi unit of the All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) today staged a sit-in against the Government's signing of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS).
It claimed that GATS, which includes education, will drain out higher education funds from India.
AIDSO Treasurer Zubair Rabbani said the World Trade Organsiation (WTO) wants the government to completely withdraw funding higher studies.
''Identifying higher education as a potentially super profit sector, WTO wants the Government to pull out completely from it, stop all fundings to it and facilitate the investment of global capital,'' he said The Hong Kong agreement also stipulates a time-frame within which Governments of various countries have to submit their plans in this direction, he said.
