Srinagar, July 25 (UNI) Security forces gunned down three heavily armed infiltrators in Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir today while elsewhere in the state a militant was killed and a top commander of Lashker-e-Toiba arrested.

A Defence Ministry spokesman said troops gunned down three infiltrators immediately after they sneaked into this side from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) early this morning.

He said troops noticed some suspicious movement at Bagtoo near the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector early in the morning.

As the troops challenged and asked them to surrender, the infiltratore fired heavily, he said adding the fire was retaliated effectively and in the fierce encounter three militants were killed.

Some arms and ammunition were also seized from the encounter site, he said.

About 50 infiltrators were killed by the security forces near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir after they crossed over from PoK since January this year.

He said troops of 33 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint operation at Handwara in the frontier district of Kupwara early this morning.

However, as the troops were sealing the area, militants fired upon them with automatic weapons. Troops also retaliated and in the encounter, one militant was killed so far. One AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant.

At least six persons were injured in a grenade blast at Narabal on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road earlier in the day, an official spokesman said.

He said militants hurled a hand grenade towards security forces at Narabal Chowk, about 15 km from here on the highway, However, it missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside, causing injuries to six persons. The injured were hospitalised.
