Sensex swings 377 points, closes at 10,215.37
Mumbai, Jul 24: In a day full of volatility the BSE Sensitive Index (Sensex) swung 377 points, as intense buying took the index above 10,252 points to finally close at 10, 215.37.
The Sensex closed 129 points above the previous close after the Banking and Technology shares revived the positivity which was negligent in the intial hours of trading. Till the mid afternoon Sensex dwindled between a high of 10,100 to a low of below 10k mark.
A relatively sad performance of the benchmark Asian indices was also responsible for lacklustre performance of the Indian bourses till the afternoon session. The Japanese Nikkei 225 index slipped 26.76 points or 0.18 per cent to 14,794.50, while, the Hang Seng index rose 16.41 points or 0.10 per cent to close at 16,480.59 points.
Similarly, the S&P, CNX Nifty also rose 40.85 points or 1.39 per cent to end on 2,985.85 points.
The BSE sectoral indices which closed in the green were- Bankex up by 4.83 per cent, IT up by 1.70 per cent, Technology up by 1.49 per cent and PSU up by 0.99 per cent. Whereas, the sectors which have closed in the red were - smallcap down 1.17 per cent, metals down by 0.69 per cent and FMCG down by 0.41 per cent.
The major gainers on the BSE Sensex were - ICICI up by 6.22 per cent to Rs 514.90, Wipro by 4.67 per cent to Rs 468.50, Satyam by 3.93 per cent to Rs 713.55, SBI by 3.44 per cent to Rs 740.70, and TCS by 2.98 per cent to Rs 1819.95, ONGC up by 2.90 per cent to Rs 1080.35, HDFC up by 2.80 per cent to Rs 729.20, Bharti up by 2.11 per cent to 365.15, L&T up by 2.02 per cent to Rs 2063.25 and HLL up by 1.99 per cent to Rs 228.30.
The losers on the index were - Cipla down by 1.95 per cent to Rs 215.85, ITC down by 1.73 per cent to Rs 164.30, Hindalco down by 1.37 per cent to Rs 155.30, NTPC down by 1.19 per cent to Rs 107.60, Tata Steel down by 0.92 per cent to Rs 479.10 and Grasim down by 0.57 per cent to Rs 1872.50.
The breadth in the broader market was in the 1477 declines as against 874 advanaces out of total 2424 scrips traded on the BSE.
