New Delhi, July 22 (UNI) Former Pakistan captain and Punjab coach Intikhab Alam backed Dinesh Mongia's inclusion for the tri-series, saying the southpaw could prove more than handy with his gentle left-arm spin.

Mongia, part of India's 2003 World Cup team, has returned to the side after his stint with Leicestershire and Intikhab insists the Punjab bat has lot to offer.

''He has developed his bowling ability as left arm spinner effectively in the last few years,'' he told BBC Sport.

Mongia made his ODI debut in 2001 but has never been a permanent fixture in the side and his last one dayer was in April last year.

''The most important aspect about Mongia's bowling is that he bowls economically. He is a good all-rounder now. His inclusion will give India more bowling options,'' the former Pakistan skipper said.

''I have faith in his potential and his ability to perform well for the country. He is going to play an important role in the team,'' Intikhab said.

Earlier, chief selector Kiran More justified Mongia's return to the side saying, ''Dinesh is the ideal cricketer as he bowls left-arm spin, and has bowled very well in county cricket and domestic cricket.

''His plus point is his batting, and of course his fielding.

That's where the all-rounder comes in,'' More said.
