'Moderate quake in southwest China, 11 dead'

Shanghai, Jul 22: A moderate earthquake in China's southwestern Yunnan province today toppled houses and killed at least 11 people, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The 5.1 earthquake occurred at 06:40 (IST), Xinhua said, citing the local seismological department.

Forty-one people were injured and had been taken to hospital, Xinhua quoted local officials as saying.

Rescue teams were on their way to the quake-hit area.

Xinhua said the epicentre of the quake was about 90 km (56 miles) from Zhaotong city in Yunnan province.
