Provisional results of 5th Economic Census of Delhi released

New Delhi, July 21 (UNI) Delhi Minister of Finance and Planning A K Walia today released the provisional results of Fifth Economic Census conducted in the national capital by Directorate of Economics and Statistics during May-June 2005.

The Economic Census, conducted under centrally-sponsored scheme, presented complete picture of all entrepreneurial activities operating in Delhi. The early results of Economic Census also indicated district-wise number of enterprise along with number of persons working in these enterprises besides the enterprises which were running without premises and other characteristics of Economic Activities in the city.

The capital's share in total National Employment comes to 4.12 per cent, which was much more than 25 states/union territories, including developed states like Punjab and Haryana.

Dr Walia said about 7,53,795 enterprises were operating in Delhi during 2005. Out of which only 27,695 (3.67 per cent) were in rural area and 7,26,100 (96.33 per cent) in urban area. About 12.77 per cent (96238 enterprises) of the total enterprises in Delhi were operating without premises.

Out of 7,53,795 total enterprises, 5,328 were agricultural enterprises and 7,48,467 were non-agricultural enterprises.

He further said the total number of enterprises in Delhi had increased from 6,85,852 in fourth Economic Census conducted in Delhi during 1998 to 7,53,795 in 2005 indicating a growth of about ten per cent (average annual growth rate of 1.36 per cent).

The total number of persons engaged in these enterprises had increased from 35 lakh in 1998 to 41 lakh in 2005 registering a growth of about 17 per cent during this period (average annual growth rate of 2.21 per cent).

The average number of persons working in each enterprise increased from 5.10 in 1998 to 5.41 in 2005.

Dr. Walia added that for the first time Economic Census had been conducted district-wise in Delhi.

The census reveals that, the North-West district had the maximum number of enterprises in Delhi. About 1.31 lakh enterprises (17.33 per cent of the total) in Delhi were in North-West district followed by 1.07 lakh enterprises (14.16 of the total) in South district, 1.01 lakh enterprises (13 per cent) were in West district, 92,156 enterprises (12.23 per cent) in East district, 90,677 enterprises (12 per cent) were in North-East district, 79,660 enterprises (10.57 per cent) in North district, 77,610 enterprises (10.3 per cent) in Central district, 62,275 enterprises (8.26 per cent) in South-West district and 13,044 enterprises (1.73 per cent) in New Delhi district.

Out of a total of 40.80 lakh persons working in enterprises in Delhi, 6.86 lakh persons were working in South district followed by 5.86 lakh persons in North-west district, 4.64 lakh persons in West district, 4.32 lakh persons in North-East district, 4.05 lakh persons in East district, 3.95 lakh persons in North district, 3.89 lakh persons in New Delhi district.

Out of 40.80 lakh total persons working in various enterprises in Delhi, about 35.68 lakh (87.45 per cent of the total) were male and 3.78 lakh (9.26 per cent) were female workers.

Dr Walia disclosed that it was for the first time that a business register would be prepared for the enterprises having ten or more workers in Delhi.

Out of a total of 7.54 lakh enterprises in Delhi, 20,177 enterprises were having ten or more workers. In South district 4,501 enterprises were having ten or more workers followed by 3,826 enterprises in North-west district, 2,236 enterprises in West district, 1,866 enterprises in New Delhi, 1,837 enterprises in East district, 1,735 enterprises in North-east district, 1,538 enterprises in Central district, 1,355 enterprises in South-west district and 1,283 enterprises in North district were having ten or more workers.

Dr Walia said Delhi's share in the total enterprises in the country was 1.79 per cent as compared to 1.56 per cent of Chhattishgarh and 1.17 per cent of Jharkhand.

However, Delhi's share in the total employment in the country was 4.12 per cent, he added.
