Torrential rain lashes Coastal K'taka

Mysore, July 20 (UNI) After a week's reprieve, torrential rains started lashing the Coastal and Ghat areas of Karnataka, increasing the inflow into major reservoirs in the State.

In the hilly Kodagu district, life was crippled by widespread rainfall since yesterday. Rains lashed the twin temple towns of Bhagamandala and Talacauvery, and the confluence of river Cauvery, Kannike and Sujyothi was in spate. Roads to Madikeri, Napoklu, Talacauvery, Kanur and Nittur remained blocked due to overflow of rivers and streams.

A Mangalore report said no damage was reported so far. Due to landslide at a railway track on the Mangalore-Hassan railway line at Mittur near Kabara in Puttur, train service was disrupted again yesterday. The line was restored later in the evening.

While Kollur recorded the maximum rainfall of 16 cm, it was followed by Karkala (15), Mudibidre (12), Belthangadi (11), Bantwal, Udupi, Thirthahalli, Humchadakatte, Hosanagar (10 each), Puttur, Mani Mudigere, Sringeri (9 each), Nilkund, Gerusoppa, Linganamakki (8 each), Subramanya, Mangalore AP, Panambur and Bhagamandala (7 each).

The Meteorological department has forecast heavy rain at a few places with isolated very heavy rainfall over Coastal Karnataka and the Ghat sections during the next 24 hours.

Authorities at the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) reservoir have maintained the level at 124.45 ft as against the maximum of 124.80 ft. While the inflow had reduced to 36,176 cusecs, the discharge was 27,593 cusecs.

Following rains in its catchment areas in Wayanad district of Kerala, the inflow into the Kabini reservoir was 27,348 cusecs and outflow was 26,338 cusecs. The level was maintained at 2,283 ft as against the full level of 2,284 ft.

The combined outflow from KRS and Kabini was over 50,000 cusecs.

The Harangi level was maintained at 2,856.05 ft as against the maximum level of 2,859 ft. The inflow and outflow was 4,659 and 4,499 cusecs respectively.
