Russia seeks UNSC's intervention in West Asia
Moscow, July 20 (UNI) Russia today urged the UN Security Council to take a comprehensive approach to the situation in the West Asia, not limiting itself to decisions on individual tracks alone.
''Moscow hopes that the UN Security Council, which is discussing the situation in Lebanon, will demonstrate full awareness of its responsibility, abide strictly by the United Nations Charter and will be guided by the interests of a just, stable and comprehensive peace in the region with due attention given to all parties in the conflict and the agreements reached,'' Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
''To attain this goal, it is extremely important to make maximum use of a comprehensive approach to the situation in West Asia, the one applied when the G-8 summit in St Petersburg was drafting a statement on the situation in West Asia,'' the statement said.
''The consequences of the current crisis would hardly be overcome if the work ends with decisions on individual tracks of the regional settlement. A comprehensive look at all aspects of the West Asian situation appears increasingly necessary, based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions,'' it noted.
Moscow also expressed concern over the fate of Russians isolated from the world in southern Lebanon.
''We are particularly concerned over the fate of our compatriots isolated in southern Lebanon. We will do our best to help them safely leave the region,'' a Foreign Ministry statement said.
''The contacts have been established with the United Nations on the issue,'' it added.
