Report should be ready by Oct : Swaminathan

Hyderabad, Jul 20 (UNI) National Commission on Farmers Chairman M S Swaminathan today said the Commission's final report would be submited to the Centre in October.

Talking to newsmen at International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) at Patancheru he said, ''For the scientific monsoon management 'monsoon managers' should be posted in every village. They would advice the farmers on the cropping pattern depending on the weather conditions''.

He said one trained male and female monsoon managers should be in every village to advise the farmers on which crop would be beneficial to improve their economic condition and the agricultural productivity during the monsoon crisis.

He said in fact, there was no monsoon failures in the country since 100 years. Though there were a few changes in the monsoon conditions, overall, there was no report of monsoon failures in the country.

He said the Commission had been seeking the feed back from the farmers and farming community and the organisations connected with the farmers from all over the country and submit its recommendations.

This would improve the economic viability and survival of farmers and farming community in the country.

Dr Swaminathan who attended the project review and planning workshop of ICRISAT said that ICRISAT model consortium approach for integrated watershed mangement was necessary to improve rural livelihood in drought-prone districts thorughout India.
