Inquiry commission to probe Jamia violence
New Delhi, July 20 (UNI) Jamia Millia Islamia University Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hassan today set up a one-man inquiry commission, headed by Justice (Retd) S K Sabharwal, to probe the violent incidents in the campus following which the institute was closed sine die.
However, the Jamia students union have opposed the inquiry commission, saying the perpetrators of violence cannot order an inquiry and an independent body should look into the matter.
''The Vice Chancellor, Proctor Rocket Ibrahim and his son Ejaz were all responsible for the attack on Students Union president Shams Pervez and two other students. How can they appoint an inquiry committee?'' Jamia Students Union leader Satya Prakash Mishra said.
He demanded the vice-chancellor's resignation and police action against Mr Ibrahim.
Violence broke out in the campus on Tuesday after Shams Pervez and some other students alleged that University staff, including the Proctor, and some unidentified people tried to attack them when they tried to meet the Vice-Chancellor regarding denial of admission to them.
The Union Leader was admitted to hospital with serious injuries after about half a dozen students alleged ''Proctor Rocket Ibrahim, his son and their men'' beat him up.
Following which students reportedly went on the rampage and damaged Jamia property and some vehicles.
The institute had been closed indefinitely as a precautionary measure after violence on the campus. The vice-chancellor also issued orders to students to vacate the hostel within the next 48 hours otherwise their claim to a room will not be considered.
Police and Rapid Action Force have been deployed in large numbers following tension on the campus.
