Gogoi assures of taking all measures to tackle insurgency

Guwahati, July 20 (UNI) Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today assured the Assembly that his government would not show any laxity in tackling the threat posed by fundamentalist and jehadi organisations active in the state.

Political parties in the Assembly expressed concern over reported growing activities of fundamentalist groups and jehadi outfits in the state and demanded concerted action to arrest growth of these organisations.

Moving a cut motion against supplementary demand for fund, related to the police department, Opposition political parties, led by the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), demanded a statement from the government on action taken to curb the activities of fundamentalist and jehadi groups.

The Opposition political parties also demanded to know from the government about the development related to the peace initiative with the banned ULFA.

Replying to the debate, Mr Gogoi assured that his government was aware of the development and a red alert had been sounded in the state. He said the red alert was meant not only for police but also to general public.

Police sans cooperation from the public could not tackle such threat from fundamentalist elements effectively, Mr Gogoi said.

Regarding the blame game going on between Ulfa and the Centre about holding direct peace talks, Mr Gogoi reiterated that the banned Ulfa must send a direct communication to the Union government expressing its willingness to hold direct parleys.

He said the question of ceasefire with the banned ULFA would come into consideration only when the insurgent group gave a commitment not to indulge in violence.
