Fencing borders brought down infiltration: Regupathy

Madurai, July 20 (UNI) Infiltration from across the border has drastically come down after fencing was taken up on the Indo-Pak boundary, Union Minister of State for Home S Regupathy said today.

Addressing the valedictory function of the five-day Public Information Campaign organised by the PIB here, he said 16000 km of the porous border on the Western Frontier had been fenced.

Stating that nearly 60 to 70 per cent of the work was over, he said 90 per cent had been completed on the Punjab-Kashmir sector.

Terrorists sneaking into the country through the Western sector had been curtailed to a large extent, improving the security situation, he added.

Similarly, the boundary with the Eastern neighbours would be fenced, he said but referred to the difficulties in accomplishing it. The terrain with rivers and valleys posed a much greater challenge, he observed but expressed the Government's resolve to complete it.

Reiterating the charge that Pakistan's ISI was involved in the recent Mumbai blasts, the Minister said the terrorist attack was aimed at maiming the economic growth of the nation. He was of the view that those jealous of the nation's progress on the economic front have carried out the attacks. Justifying the decision to put on hold the dialogue with Islamabad, he asked how talks could be held when innocent people were massacred.
