Wipro goes on an expansion spree

Bangalore, July 19 (UNI) IT major Wipro, the third largest exporter of software in the country, has harped on a major expansion programme both within the country and abroad.

Speaking to reporters after announcing the company's results for the first quarter ended June 30, Wipro Chairman Azim Premji said the company's new base in Romania had been completed and the facility would become operational during this quarter. Work on its new facilities in Brazil and Portugal were also progressing rapidly, he added.

He said Wipro would soon launch a Software Technology Park right next to its Sarjapur campus in the city. The Park, coming up on a sprawling campus, was nearing completion.

Mr Premji informed that the company had got permission from the state government to create a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Electronic City on the outskirts of the city.

Talking about land acquisition, he said Wipro had brought land in the port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and construction work at the site would begin soon. It had also purchased land in the SEZ, promoted by the Orissa Government, in Bhubaneshwar, besides Goa. Under Phase-I of its Goan facility, the company would soon start its Business Process Outsourcing operations.

The company had taken up expansion programmes in its existing facilities in cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Kochi and Punjab, he added.
