New Pondy Lt.Governer to focus on development

Pondicherry, July 19 (UNI) Mr Mukut Mithi who assumed office as the 18th Lt.Governor of the union territory of Pondicherry today said he would work in coordination with Chief Minister N Rangasamy, his cabinet, members of the legislative assembly and Parliament to ensure the speedy development of Pondicherry.

Talking to newspersons immediately after assuming office, Mr Mithi said he had called on President A P J Abdul Kalam before coming here and Mr Kalam had given him a piece of advise for the development of Pondicherry. He would work for the realisation of the vision of the president.

He said he had come to Pondicherry with a mission and wished to mingle with the people here.

Asked about his priority, Mr Mithi said he had heard that Karaikal was badly affected by the tsunami and he along with the Chief Minister would visit the region, probably after the budget session of the assembly to Monitor the progress of the relief and rehabilitation work there.

He said when he went to Chennai somebody told him that Pondicherry be made a mini-Singapore and added that with the cooperation of all, Pondicherry could be made a Singapore.

He said development of tourism would be another task of the government.

Mr Mithi who signed the first file to set up an advisory committee on education to see ways and means to improve the quality of education said he had resigned his membership in the Arunachal assembly and also the post of the President of the Arunachal Congress Committee.

Answering a question he said ''union territory status'' was better when there were not much of resources to mobilise.
