National workshop to train officials implementing JNURM

New Delhi, July 19(UNI) State Government officials and media would be trained and educated about the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission at a three-day workshop being organised at Jat Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA) at Pune from July 20 to 22.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja will inaugurate the training programme.

The Minister will interact with the Municipal functionaries of the participating States on various issues of the National Urban Renewal Mission.

The Commissioners and Additional Commissioners of 10 cities of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Rajasthan are participating in the awareness programme. The Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority is also attending the programme.

The Jawaharlal National Urban Renewal Mission was launched on the December three, 2005 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi to build and renew urban infrastructure in 63 selected cities across the country.

The total allocation for the mission is Rs. 50,000 Crore' to be spent in seven years by the Central Government. An equal amount will be spent in this period by State Governments and Urban Local Bodies.

The workshop will disseminate information about the Mission and about various schemes with a view to enhancing capacity building of the officials of the implementing agencies.

It will train the officials on structure and implementation of the various programmes meant for the urban poor, and sensitise them on various reforms enumerated in the mission to enable the participants to understand technical concepts like financial viability of each project and environmental and their social impact..

The three-day programme will also help the state functionaries on how to prepare city development plans and detailed project reports.

The workshop will also deal with the detail of the community participation and the strategy for efficient delivery of basic services to the urban poor.

Municipal functionaries from Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Mumbai, Vadodara, Jaipur, Nanded, Amravati, Aurangabad, Panaji and Nasik are also participating in the workshop.

The National Mission has two sub missions--one deals with urban infrastructure and Governance and the second sub-mission focuses with basic services for urban poor.

The basic services for urban poor is being implemented by the Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. The sub-mission on urban infrastrure and governance is being implemented by the Union Ministry of Urban Development.
