IUML demands reservation for Muslims

Mumbai, July 19 (UNI) Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) president G M Banatwalla has demanded reservation for Muslims in educational institutions in view of their ''appalling backwardness''.

In a letter to the Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh, Mr Banatwalla lauded the Union Government for its firmness in implementing its reservation policy.

He said that while legislating on the reservation for OBCs, provisons should also be made for a reservation for Muslims in accordance to their population.

Mr Banatwalla contended that the entire Muslim Community is backward and the average standard of living of the Muslims has fallen below even the other backward classes.

He claimed that according to surveys, only 2.5 per cent male Muslim students and 0.8 per cent females manage to pursue postgraduation at present.
