Heated debate in MP Assly over fake encounter killings

Bhopal, July 19 (UNI) Amid heated debate over the killing of two innocent persons in a fake police encounter four years back in Bhind district, the main opposition demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

As the matter was raised by Mr Umashankar Gupta (BJP) during question hour, Minister of State for Home Nagendra Singh said as per police investigation, the two deceased had contacts with dacoit gangs and criminal cases were registered against them in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh.

Dr Govind Singh and Mr Sajjan Singh Verma (both Congress) accused the then Superintendent of Police (SP) Gajiram Meena of killing innocent people. They demanded an inquiry by the CBI or a Vidhan Sabha committee.

Mr Lal Singh Arya (BJP) came to the defence of Mr Meena and accused the opposition of creating an atmosphere against a good officer.

Angered by the comment, opposition members started speaking in one voice and Dr Govind challenged the minister that he would resign from his post if his contention was proved wrong.

The Minister a Vidhan Sabha committee was formed earlier to probe into the matter but a new Vidhan Sabha was constituted before the report came.

Speaker Ishwardas Rohani sought to know Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's opinion regarding the opposition's demand.

Mr Chouhan said there was no need for investigation as the matter was sub-judice before the Madhya Pradesh High Court's Gwalior bench.
