Get back radars supplied to Lankan Airforce: Vaiko

Chennai, July 19 (UNI) Marumalarchi DMK (MDK) General Secretary Vaiko, a staunch supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to get back the radars, supplied to the Sri Lankan Airforce, and desist from any sale of arms to the island nation.

In a four-page letter to Dr Singh, copy of which was released to the media here, Mr Vaiko, pointing out that India would be found fault with for enabling the Sri Lankan Airforce to strafe and bomb the Tamil areas, said India should not provide any sort of military assistance to Sri Lanka.

''India should get back the radars, already supplied and should not provide any sort of military assistance to Sri Lanka including sale of arms to honour the decision taken by the Government of India in 1999 in an all party meeting,'' he said.

The MDMK leader said that the Prime Minister was kind enough to consider his request to dispense with the move to have Defence Cooperation Pact with Sri Lanka, which would have been a fatal historic blunder, but he was shocked to know that India has supplied radars.

Mr Vaiko accused that the Sri Lankan government was trying to distort the real situation and hoodwink India by making false promises about devolution of powers. ''India should not fall into the trap,'' he cautioned.
