First Robotic surgery performed in AIIMS

New Delhi, July 19 (UNI) The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) today acquired the distinction of performing the first four-arm robotic surgery in Asia.

Dr Ashok K Hemal, Professor of the Urology Department, performed the surgery with the state-of-the- art four arms Robotic Surgical System on a patient who was suffering from prostate cancer.

Robotic surgery is advanced from laparscopic surgery where a robot is used to manipulate the surgical instruments while the surgeon controls the robot's movement.

The robot allows extreme surgical precision, thus minimising the incidence of post-operative pain and complications.
