BHU students protest varsity fee hike
Varanasi, July 19 (UNI) Banaras Hindu University (BHU) students today joined the varsity passouts in staging a 'dharna' against the steep fee hike announced by the University administration recently.
The dharna led by former student leaders Bhuvneshwar Dwivedi and Ajit Singh outside BHU main gate, saw a large number of former and present students raise voice on the issue.
''With the hike, BHU wants to close its doors for the students of lower economic strata. We will not tolerate this and if the hike is not rolled back soon, a massive movement will be launched,'' Ajit Singh maintained.
A two-to-four fold fee hike in all courses was decided at the meeting of BHU Academic Council recently chaired by Vice-Chancellor Panjab Singh.
The varsity administration, however, later decided to scrap the students union fee, as the students body was non-functional for the last eight yrs.
BHU is one of the largest universities in the world.
