181 Sri Lankan refugees accommodated in KRC
Tiruchirapalli(Tamil Nadu), July 19: After a gap of three weeks, 181 Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees arrived on a single day at the Transit Camp at Kottapattu in Tiruchirapalli city, the second largest permanent camp for Srilankan Tamil Refugees in Tamilnadu.
M Gurulakshmanan, Special Deputy Collector (Transit Camp) told UNI here today, that the refugees constituting 55 families, including 68 women and 36 children, arrived in a special bus from the Mandapam Refugee Camp (MRC) at Rameshwaram, following the overcrowding of MRC, due to sudden influx of refugees from the island nation.
With the arrval of 181 fresh refugees to the Kottapattu Refugee Camp (KRC) last night the total number of refugees at the camp has increased to 1809, including 735 women. The KRC was established in the year 1983, following heavy influx of refugees from Sri Lanka due to the ethnic violence.
He said, at present there were 488 houses situated in eight acres of land in the KRC and the fresh influx of refugees to the camp would be accomodated in the vacant houses.
It might be recalled that over 73 Tamil refugees, comprising 25 women and 18 children, consisting of 18 families, who arrived on June 26 from MRC were also accommodated at the KRC.
