Coffee planter attacked by pachyderm

Madikeri, Karnataka, July 18 (UNI) An elephant has attacked a coffee planter, seriously injuring him, at Banavara near Shanivarsanthe in the hilly Kodagu district of Karnataka.

The incident occurred when Mariappa was taking a morning stroll inside his estate on Sunday. He fell unconscious ten feet away, when the tusker charged at him from behind.

Mariappa was hospitalised by his family members with multiple injuries. Doctors attending on him said he had undergone hernia operation recently and the operated part had got opened due to the attack.

Range Forest Officer Monnappa, who visited the spot, told this correspondent that a request had been sent to the Government to capture 22 elephants in Kodagu-Hassan border.
