AIADMK MP surrenders before TN court in dowry case
Madurai, July 18 (UNI) AIADMK Rajya Sabha Member and popular film comedian S S Chandran and his daughter, facing a dowry harassment case, today surrendered before a judicial magistrate, in compliance with a High Court directive.
Magistrate Subathra, before whom they surrendered, admitted the petitions and granted them bail.
Earlier, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, while granting conditional bail to the MP and his daughter Kanmani, directed them to surrender before the concerned court and obtain bail within 15 days.
The MP was ordered to sign every day except on Mondays at the police station where the case was registered.
The case was registered against the duo and five of their relatives at the All Women Police Station in the city on a complaint lodged by Latha, wife of the MP's nephew, D Dhanasekaran.
In her complaint, Lata alias Lata Natchiar, had alleged harassment from her husband and in-laws since her marriage in 2002 demanding more dowry and even a threat to eliminate her.
At the time of her marriage, 50 sovereigns of gold and Rs two lakh cash was given as dowry, she added.
Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 420 (cheating) and 498-A (harassment of woman by husband) and section 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act have been invoked in the case.
While Dhanasekaran was arrested and remanded to custody, seven special police teams were formed to nab the MP who had gone absconding.
AIADMK functionaries and supporters who gathered at the district court complex raised slogans accusing the ruling DMK of foisting cases against political opponents.
