20 tonne whale washed ashore

Rameshwaram, July 18: A giant whale weighing 20 tonne was washed ashore at Pamban shore near here.

Official sources said the 65-feet long mammal was alive when it was spotted by a group of local fishermen. The whale died after three hours.

On hearing this, a large number of people thronged the shore to have a glimpse of the whale.

Forest and fisheries department officials rushed to the spot and separated the fins of the whale and kept them at Mandapam museum.

The officials said the dead whale would be buried later.
