Woman delivers 'strange conjoined babies'

Tiruchirapalli, July 17 (UNI) In one of the rare cases in medical history, a 30-year-old woman delivered 'strange conjoined female babies' with a single trunk, two pelvis, each having two lower limbs, at the K A P Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital, here, last evening.

Hospital Dean M Dhanaraju told UNI the conjoined babies having shoulders separately in one head were called 'ancephaly' (brain is absent) in medical terms.

The eyes and mouth were not in position. They had only one umblical cord and well-developed legs. It was premature delivery and the babies were born dead. Such cases occurred one in a million.

The woman, N Sampoornam, belonging to the sleepy village of Ammankudi in Musiri Taluk of Tiruchirapalli District was admitted to the hospital on Saturday with labour pain.

An ultra sonogram revealed the strange conjoined premature twins.

The delivery was normal. However, the babies were born dead.

Sampoornam and her husband Nallathambi were agricultural labourers and they had two girl children.They were not close relatives and the woman had gone for periodical check-ups, Dr Dhanraju said.

The body has been preserved for research purpose a the medical college,he said.
