Sreekumar: Gujarat Govt has no objection to lifting of stay

New Delhi, July 17 (UNI) The state of Gujarat today informed the Supreme Court that it has no objection if Gujarat High Court stay order against former Additional Director General of Gujarat Police R B Sreekumar's petition pending in the Central Administrative Tribunal(CAT) challenging denial of promotion to him is vacated.

The state counsel also informed the bench comprising Justices K G Balakrishnan and D K Jain that the proceedings in the CAT might be allowed to go on.

The court however issued fresh notice to senior IPS officer of the state Kaushik, the alleged beneficiary of denial of promotion to the petitioner who had exposed Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and senior bureaucrats and police officials for playing partisan role during 2002 communal riots which had rocked the state in the aftermath of Godhra incident.

Sreekumar who was the senior most police officer in the state was denied promotion for making public his report as head of state police vigilance department saying that instructions were allegedly issued to the state police not to act against rioters who by and large belonged to Sangh Parivar during communal violence which left hundreds dead and rendered thousands injured and homeless.

The court, however did not pass any order vacating the interim stay granted by the High Court against proceedings pending in the CAT.

Appointment of P C Pandey the then Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad, as DGP of the state is already under challenge in the apex court on the grounds that Pandey has already been indicted by the Supreme Court for his alleged partisan role during communal riots.
