Meghalaya on high alert

Shillong, July 17 (UNI) Meghalaya and its border with Bangladesh has been put on 'high alert' following the Mumbai serial bomb blast.

Security forces, especially the Border Security Force (BSF), are on 'extra vigil' along the Indo-Bangla border.

Likewise, the Meghalaya police are on 'high alert' in the aftermath of the serial Mumbai bomb blasts.

Inspector General of BSF Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland frontier Jyoti Prakash Sinha said, ''we have issued an order to our troops to be extra vigilant along the border''.

The extra precautionary measures have been put in place after fear that those involved in the serial Mumbai bomb blast might escape to Bangladesh using the Meghalaya corridor.

Mr Sinha told UNI here that ''there is a likelihood of people crossing over to Bangladesh after the Mumbai bomb blast''. On July 13, Tripura police detained eleven suspected Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activists from Kamalpur sub-division bordering Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the state Director General of Police William Richmond Marbaniang said here, the police have been put 'on high alert'.

In fact, on Sunday last, Meghalaya police deported some 200 Bangladeshi infiltrators.
