KRS reservoir reaches brim; over 15,000 cusecs let out

Mysore, July 17 (UNI) The Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) reservoir across river Cauvery, near here, touched its maximum level today, consequent to which authorities released more than 15,000 cusecs of water into the river.

Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited Executive Engineer K J Vijay Kumar told UNI at KRS that the water level at the dam was maintained at 124.30 ft as against the full level of 124.80 ft. The inflow into the reservoir this afternoon was 17,962 cusecs and the outflow, including to the canal, was 15,254 cusecs.

After offering traditional pooja to the dam, the authorities opened five crest gates, releasing 1,800 cusecs from each gate.

Mr Kumar said the authorities expected an increase in inflow into the reservoir as the Hemavathi reservoir authorities had released nearly 40,000 cusecs of water into KRS and it was expected to reach the dam tomorrow afternoon. Along with the present outflow, the entire inflow from Hemavathy would be released into the river. The outflow was expected to be nearly 50,000 cusecs by tomorrow evening.

He said flood warning had been issued to the people living along the banks of the river to move to safer places. Besides, visitors have been barred from strolling on the dam for a couple of days, he added.
