Prez Kalam arrives on 2-day visit to Mumbai
Mumbai, July 17: A tight security ring was thrown around the city as President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam arrived here by a special aircraft from Bhopal for a two-day visit.
The President, upon his arrival immediately proceeded to the KEM Hospital, State Government's Protocol Department sources informed.
Thereafter, he will visit the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and interact with young scientists and engineers.
Tomorrow, the second day of his two-day visit here, Dr Kalam will inaugurate the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Mumbai University. On the same day, he will also launch the centenary celebrations of the Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC). He is also scheduled to visit the Asian Heart Institute at Bandra.
Dr Kalam, thereafter, will also visit the Mahim railway station and pay homage to the blast victims by observing a two-minute silence at 1824 hours which, incidentally, is the time when the first of the seven blasts occurred here on July 11.
The Mumbai police, as an precaution, has evicted all the hawkers near the Mumbai University campus in view of the President's visit.
All the railway stalls and nearby vendors including those having Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) licenses will remain closed as the Mumbai police do not want to take any risk during the visit of the President.
Meanwhile the Mumbai police has also beefed up security in and around the Shanmukhanand Hall, where the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address a gathering at 1800 hrs.
