Independent Councillor propels PMC to pole posts
Pondicherry, July 17 (UNI) The impasse in the indirect elections to the Neravy Commune Panchayat in Karaikal Region of the union territory was broken with the Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC) candidates bagging chairperson and vice-chairperson posts.
According to official sources, four councillors (PMC-2, AIADMK-1, independent-1) were elected to the panchayat.
A councillor had to propose the name of the candidate and another second it for indirect elections to the posts of commune panchayat chairman and vice-chairman.
Since, this was not possible, the elections were postponed.
In the circumstance, Independent Councillor Bousila Begam extended support to the PMC following which party candidate Rathinavalli was elected as the chairperson and Bousila Begam as the vice-chairperson. Though AIADMK Councillor Selvaraju filed nomination for the post of chairman, it was rejected as there was none to propose his name.
The PMC had already captured the Ariyankuppam Commune Panchayat.
