IISER to be set-up at Mohali

Chandigarh, July 17 (UNI) The Planning Commission has accorded its approval to the prestigious Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) for Punjab.

This Institute which would come up at Mohali would strive for global level excellence in science and research. The Union government in its Annual Budget-2006-07 had given approval for three IISER to be located in Kolkata, Pune and Punjab.

While the construction of the Institutes have begun at Pune and Kolkata, the one in Punjab would commence soon. These three Institutes would be in line with the Indian Institute of Science (IIS), Bangalore.

Giving details of the project, here today, Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, who also holds the Higher Education portfolio, said the state government had decided to allocate 200 acres of land required for this Institute, in Sector 81 at Mohali.

The initial project cost, including the cost of land, would be around Rs 500 crores. She said at present the only science institute in the country was the IIS, Bangalore, which was fully funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

She said the IISER institute would actively forge a strong working relationships with existing universities and colleges in the region so as to give a definite push to science education.
