''High alert'' in Union Territory
Pondicherry, July 17 (UNI) The coastal areas of Pondicherry and Karaikal were put on ''high alert'' following the under sea earthquake and the subsequent tsunami in Indonesia today.
District collector Theva Neethi Das told UNI that though there was no threat of tsunami this time, the official machinery has been put on high alert.
He said no tsunami warning has been issued to the public as it would create unnecessary panic.
The December 2004 tsunami had claimed over 700 lives in the union territory.
