Criminal action against panchayats for not disposing garbage

Panaji, July 17 (UNI) The Goa State Pollution Control Board intends to take criminal action against the defaulting municipalities, panchayats which failed to comply with the garbage disposal scheme.

Disclosing this in reply to Laxmikant Parsekar(BJP)'s starred question, tabled in the State Assembly today, Deputy Chief Minister (in charge of environment) Dr Wilfred de Souza said all the municipalities and panchayats were yet to fully comply with the statutory provisions for proper treatment and disposal of garbage in the state.

They were required to identify the garbage disposal site and make arrangement for its treatment in accordance with the Municipal Solid Waste(Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, by the end of the year 2003.

So were the village panchayats under the Rural Garbage Disposal Scheme,2005 by February 18, 2005, he added.
