Boy injured in elephant attack

Tiruchirapalli, July 17 (UNI) A nine-year-old boy had a miraculous escape, when he was attacked by an elephant while giving alms to it at Varaganeri area in the city.

According to sources, Vignesh, along with his one-year-old sister tried to give alms to the elephant who turned violent, and attacked the boy. However, the passersby, who noticed the danger, immediately saved the boy.

Vignesh suffered head injuries in the attack and was admitted to a private hospital, where his condition was said to be stable.

The elephant 'Rani' belongs to a private individual hailing from Srirangam and was returning home, after attending a function with its mahout.

Acting on information, police rushed to the spot and took the elephant to the police station.

A case has been registered against the Mahout Jeganathan (27) and an investigation was underway, police added.
